Performance Evaluation of Bluetooth Polling Schemes: An Analytical Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the recent years, many polling schemes for Bluetooth networks have been proposed and evaluated. To the authors knowledge, however, analysis has been carried out mainly through computer simulations and, up to now, no mathematical treatment of this topic has been presented. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework for performance evaluation of polling algorithms in Bluetooth piconets. The analysis is carried out by resorting to an effective and simple mathematical method, called Equilibrium Point Analysis. The system is modelled as a multidimensional finite Markov chain and performance metrics are evaluated at the equilibrium state. The analysis is focused on three classical polling schemes, namely Pure Round Robin, Gated Round Robin and Exhaustive Round Robin, which are compared in terms of packet delay, channel utilization, and fairness among users. Both analytical and simulation results are presented for three relevant scenarios, in order to validate the accuracy of the analysis proposed.

Bluetooth is an emerging standard for short range, low cost, low power wireless access technology. The Bluetooth technology is just starting to appear on the market and there is an urgent need to enable new applications with real time constraints to run on top of Bluetooth devices. The Bluetooth Specification proposes a Round Robin scheduler as possible solution for scheduling the transmissions...

In this paper, an approach is developed to improve the power efficiency of Bluetooth. The better efficiency is achieved by reducing the unnecessary polling operations in the Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR) controllers. An analysis of the current low power modes in the Bluetooth BR/EDR controller indicates that their activation requires a critical and challenging parameter negotiation pha...
متن کاملBluetooth Time Division Duplex - Exact Analysis as a Polling System
Bluetooth enables wireless communication via ad-hoc networks. The basic network topology (piconet) is a collection of slaves controlled by a master. A scatternet is a multihop network of piconets. Efficient piconet and scatternet communication requires design of intra and inter-piconet scheduling algorithms. Thus, numerous scheduling algorithms have been recently proposed. Analytical performanc...
متن کاملPolling and Bridge Scheduling Algorithms in Bluetooth
This report presents a brief overview and classification of intra-piconet polling schemes for Bluetooth piconets. It also presents a similar overview and classification of bridge scheduling algorithms for Bluetooth scatternets. Some additional issues, in particular the transmission of TCP/IP traffic over Bluetooth, and segmentation and reassembly policies, are discussed as well.
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Polling-Based Communication Systems Using SPNs
In this paper we present stochastic Petri nets (SPNs) that can be used for the evaluation of polling mechanisms. Polling mechanisms (or systems) appear in many forms in computer-communication systems: the well-known token-ring and token-bus network access schemes such as present in IEEE P802.4/5 and in FDDI, and the scheduling mechanisms in switching fabrics, e.g., for ATM systems, operate alon...
